The projected opening of the Winnipeg Art Gallery's Inuit Art Center is being celebrated with an exhibition of Inuit style. The name for the Inuit Art Center, Qaumajuq, was announced on October 28 in a virtual Indigenous naming announcement, and is an Inuktitut term that translates to 'it is bright, it is lit.' The exhibition features wearable works from Government of Nunavut’s Fine Art Collection and the Winnipeg Art Gallery's collection. According to Jocelyn Piirainen, the Assistant Curator of Inuit art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, “Inuit have always made our own clothing. Inuk Style celebrates the history of varying styles of clothing and jewellery and how contemporary artists are re-working traditional materials, knowledge and sewing skills to create unique pieces of wearable art.”
