Samson Nastapoka

MOTHER WITH CHILD IN HER AMAUT

SAMSON NASTAPOKA (1931-), E9-1712, Inukjuak
MOTHER WITH CHILD IN HER AMAUT, stone, ca. 1958, disc number inscribed, 11" x 9" x 10" — 27.9 x 22.9 x 25.4 cm.

Est. $6,000/9,000

Note: Excerpt from collector’s memoir: In the winter of 1956 I was working on the Central Arctic Patrol, flying to communities in Northern Quebec to meet with the Northern Service Officers. In the Hudson’s Bay store in Inukjuak I noticed a beautiful, large carving of a Woman and Child, sitting on a table in the manager’s office. When I asked about it, he told me that it was too heavy to ship south so he was just keeping it in his office. As I was flying on a charter aircraft I was able to buy it and bring it home. It became the largest carving in my collection.
