Inuit Artists Print Workbook as married to David Tiktaalaaq is an accomplished printmaker as well as print artist. About half the images she has printed have been her own, using a variety of techniques---SC, St. SC/S, Lino, and Litho Stencil --------- Drawings, Prints, Printmaking, Wallhangings, Sculpture ---------------- http://www.radio.cz/en/article/38936 Judith Nasby is also the author of a new book entitled 'Myth and Reality' which is based on Inuit artist Irene Avaalaaqiaq. Irene Avaalaaqiaq, who works are also on display at the exhibit, is one of Canada's most prominent Inuit artists. She currently lives in the Nunavut community of Baker Lake, which is approximately 250 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. Her artwork is composed primarily of large wall hangings which are pictures made from fabric. She says she creates her art within the realm of storytelling and her life's experiences. I asked Judith Nasby if she could tell me a little about Irene Avaalaaqiaq's interesting history. "Her interesting history starts with being an orphan, and living with three different families. She had a very unhappy childhood, she had to be a slave at times to beg for food during the starvation periods. What happened to the Canadian Inuit in the 1950's and 1960's they came into settlements in the Canadian arctic because of the depletion of the Caribou herds and that led to the Canadian government setting up art programs. They gave them pencils and paper and just said, ; ahead and start drawing. This exhibition are some of the marvellous drawings that they produced over a 40 year period." --------- Irene's husband, David Tiktaalaaq, is a carver and printmaker. Her brother, William Ukpatiku, is also a carver and printmaker, as well as a crafts artist. --------------------- http://www.carleton.ca/gallery/Creature/Bios.html# Irene Avaalaaqiaq Tiktaalaaq (B.1941) Baker Lake Avaalaaqiaq was born at Princess Mary Lake and came to Baker Lake in 1959 to give birth to one of her children. Being an orphan and seeing very few people until she was about thirteen, her grandmother's old stories loomed large in her imagination. They are the exclusive subject of her art. Avaalaaqiaq worked full time as a printer, usually printing her own drawings. She is famous for her textiles as well as her drawings. The Isaacs/Innuit Gallery in Toronto mounted a solo exhibition of her wall hangings in 1972. Betty Ann Jordan suggests that she is the artist most interested in assuming the laurels of the talented Jessie Oonark, who died in 1985 (Jordan, 1994). ------ Raised by her grandmother after her mother's death, Irene's wall hangings and drawings are peopled with the spirits that she heard about in her grandmother's stories. Irene began creating wall hangings in 1970 for Jack Butler and Sheila Butler. The framing borders are filled with the faces of spirit helpers who guard travellers out on the tundra. Irene describes that the borders take on the colours of the hour: yellow for daylight; red for sunset; blue or black for the deep of night. -------- Avaalaaqiaq, Irene - Baker Lake, NU An especially talented artist, Irene Avaalaaqiaq has been making prints, drawings and wallhangings that explore myth and reality in Inuit life. An Invited Artist, we are thrilled Irene has come to share her work and stories. Her works evoke a relationship between Inuit and the Spirit world. She has been nationally and internationally recognized for her work which can be found in galleries, museums and private collections. ----------- This exhibition of nine recent wall hangings by Baker Lake artist Irene Avaalaaqiaq is presented by the Art Centre in support of Judith Nasby's new book Irene Avaalaaqiaq: Myth and Reality which was published by McGill-Queen's University Press. Myth and Reality is a beautifully illustrated book that presents the first critical retrospective look at the extraordinary achievement of this Canadian Inuit artist. Avaalaaqiaq's remarkable wall hangings and drawings reveal her rich heritage of spirit and shamanistic imagery. As one of Canada's most prominent Inuit artists she has a strong commitment to preserve her heritage and makes it accessible to an international audience. The book is a comprehensive picture of Avaalaaqiaq, a 60 year old woman whose life experiences span her birth in an igloo on the land in 1944 to her present status as a leader of the community, prolific and outstandingly creative artist, primary provider as head of household, bountiful hunter, and recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Guelph.
