Marion Tuu'Luq

Settlement: Baker Lake / Qamani’tuaq

(1910-2002) — E2-98

Alternative Names: Tuu'luuq Tuu'luuq, Marion Tuu'luuq, M Anguhadluq Tuu'luuq, Tudluq Tuu'luuq, Tuu'luq Tuu'luuq, Tulluq Tuu'luuq, Toodlook Tuu'luuq

only know year of birth and death for certain was married to Luke Anguhadluq, mother of Barnabus Oosuah, Thomas Iksiraq and Mark Uqayyuittuq (by adoption), grandmother of Sarah Niungittuq ---------------------------- Marion Tuu'luq was born around 1910 near the coastal waters of Chantrey Inlet. Before she was a year old her mother passed away, and when she was ten her invalid father died, by which time she was living with relatives in the Garry Lake area to the west. In 1928 she married her cousin, Ujarai, with whom she would have 13 children (only four survived to adulthood). After Ujarai died in 1954, Tuu'luq married the great camp leader Luke Anguhadluq (1895-1982), remaining with the latter until his death in 1982. Following their move to the new settlement of Baker Lake in 1961, Tuu'luq and Anguhadluq both took up art making as a way to provide for themselves and their families, both becoming prominent artists within the community. Along with her contemporary Jessie Oonark (1906-1985), Tuu'luq was one of the first artists to make appliquéd and embroidered wallhangings from imported fabric and thread, a form for which women artists of Baker Lake would become famous. Tuu'luq also began producing drawings, a number of which became the basis for prints. In 2002, a selection of her wallhangings was featured in a major solo exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Canada that toured to cities across Canada. Although a skin allergy forced Tuu'luq to give up art making in 1989, she continued to enjoy life and her family until her death in 2002. At once sensuously expressive and at least partially decorative, Tuu'luq's wallhangings consist mostly of groups of imagesÑhuman forms and faces, animals and spiritsÑarranged either in layered rows or in circular patterns around a central image or figure. Borders consisting of circles or stripes of alternating colours frame many of her works, while a few are made up entirely of such repetitive-decorative elements, resembling modernist abstractions. Tuu'luq's colour schemes are by turns subtly subdued and intensely dramatic. As with most wallhangings from Baker Lake, many of Tuu'luq's designs are symmetrical or semi-symmetrical; a few, however, consist of truly chaotic jumbles of images. In many of her best works, the ground is effectively covered over by a clutter of interlocking shapes and motifs, expressing, in the words of Marie Bouchard, Tuu'luq's "sense of the spiritual interconnectedness of the world." While based on a similar imagery of faces, figures, animals and transformation scenes, Tuu'luq's drawings and prints are generally less complexly composed than her wallhangings, and feature fewer images. Often strongly coloured, many of these works are notable for their representations of sensuous shapes and are distinguished, too, by Tuu'luq's unmistakable line of controlled elegance. Selected References Marion Tuu'luq (2002), Marie Bouchard ----- http://www.carleton.ca/gallery/Creature/Bios.html#Tuu'luuq Marion Tuu'luuq, the wife of Luke Anguhadluk, was involved in Baker Lake sewing projects in the 1960s. In 1970 she began drawing and by 1974 her prints were included in the annual collection. Her work has been included in nearly 50 exhibitions. In 1990 she received an honourary Doctor of Law Degree from the University of Alberta. Before moving into the settlement at Baker Lake at 50, Tuu'luuq lived in the area around Chantry Inlet and the Back River. The Inuit in this area lived primarily on caribou and fish, so it is not surprising that fish imagery is prominent in her drawings (Marion Jackson and Judith Nasby, Contemporary Inuit Drawings, 1987). = ----------------------- The exhibition Marion Tuu'luq (organized and circulated by the National Gallery of Canada) brings together 37 fascinating works on cloth by one of Canada's foremost Inuit artists. With vivid colour, delicate embroidery, and lively appliqués, Baker Lake artist Marion Tuu'luq illustrated her experience of life in the Canadian Arctic before and after the massive social, economic and political changes that took place throughout the twentieth century. Her wall hangings reflect the significance of land and family to the Inuit people and depict the joys, hardships and realities of change. This retrospective of Tuu'luq's remarkable work began its tour at the National Gallery of Canada in fall 2002. For more than two years, Tuu'luq had worked closely with guest curator Marie Bouchard and associate curator Marie Routledge to prepare for the exhibition, but she did not witness the realization of their efforts. On September 22, Tuu'luq died at the age of ninety-one, just two weeks before the opening reception. This exhibition represents over twenty years of Tuu'luq's extraordinary artistic accomplishments. Born around 1910 in the Chantry Inlet/Back River area of Nunavut, she lived a traditional, nomadic life on the land. In the 1960s, the threat of starvation compelled her family to move to the settlement of Baker Lake. Tuu'luq was profoundly changed by her estrangment from the rhythms of the nomadic life; although, she was relieved to have escaped the hardships of life on the land. Tuu'luq learned to sew from the women in her family who made hardy clothing and footwear that protected their husbands and children from the harsh elements. She brought a unique decorative flair and artistry to her designs, as well as making the clothing wind and water proof. In 1970, art advisors Jack and Sheila Butler introduced a new art making program to Baker Lake that gave artists like Tuu'luq the opportunity to marry her sewing skills with artistic expression. From the outset, Tuu'luq's work showed great detail and a delightful sense of humour. Her wall hangings reflect a unified vision of traditional Inuit life with human, animal and spirit figures linked together in dynamic designs. The works in this exhibition were located by Marie Bouchard in both public and private collections throughout North America, including two wall hangings from the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre collection: Tele-Vision Spirits (c 1980) and Composition (c 1981). Bouchard says that Ôit was a deeply satisfying journey honouring the work of a woman she respects as an artist and loves as a friend.' The exhibition Marion Tuu'luq features art work showing the particular experience and remarkable imagination of one Inuit woman whose Ôsingular vision celebrated the eternal recurrence of life and the conviction that what the Inuit dread most — extinction — will not occur.' --------------------- Exhibitions/Expositions 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, Baker Lake Print Collection 1979, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, (annual collection) 1987, 1988, 1990 (illustrated catalogue) 1974 Crafts from Arctic Canada/Artisanat de l'arctique canadien Canadian Eskimo Arts Council Ottawa, Ontario (tour) (illustrated catalogue) September - November 1976 Tuu'luq/Anguhadluq Winnipeg Art Gallery Winnipeg, Manitoba (illustrated catalogue) October 1976 Anguhadluq/Tuu'luq: Husband and Wife of Baker Lake The Upstairs Gallery Winnipeg, Manitoba January 1977 - June 1982 The Inuit Print/L'estampe inuit Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and the National Museum of Man Ottawa, Ontario (tour) (illustrated catalogue) March - June 1978 The Coming and Going of the Shaman: Eskimo Shamanism and Art Winnipeg Art Gallery Winnipeg, Manitoba (illustrated catalogue) July 1979 - 1981 Keewatin Wallhangings 1979-1981 Canadian Arctic Producers Ltd.
