Mary Igiu
PEOPLE OF THE SEA
MARY IGIU (1925-1968), E7-982, CAPE DORSET / KINNGAIT
PEOPLE OF THE SEA
stencil print, 1961, 14/50
18..5 x 24 in — 47 x 61 cm
Provenance:
a Montreal private collection
Note:
This is the only print produced from a drawing by this artist, which is a shame as it is a classic early Cape Dorset image. Although revealing the influence of Kenojuak’s style (particularly in the animal figure at the bottom), this lovely print nonetheless exhibits real originality in the form and placement of the main figure that likely represents Taleelayu, the Inuit sea goddess.
Estimate: $2,000—3,000
