Sheouak Petaulassie
Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait
(1923-1961) — E7-816
Sheouak spent her life in the camps in the Cape Dorset area, never settling permanently in the community. Encouraged to try drawing during her summer visits to Cape Dorset, she produced nine prints for the 1960 and 1961 collections. James Houston describes her as: "A remarkable woman who had a great deal of artistic talent which burst forth with the coming of the prints and flourished for three years before she died..." (Eskimo Prints, 1970).
Another of Sheouak's legacies is the design for the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative symbol which appears on all published Cape Dorset prints.
Sheouak's daughter Mayureak Ashoona is a graphic artist in Cape Dorset. Sheouak may have been born c. 1918 - the records are not clear.
