Jaco Ishulutaq

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1951) — E6-619

Jaco Ishulutaq is a Pangnirtug artist born in 1951. He began his career at 16 after learning how to carve from his grandfather. He comes from a family of notable artists, including his mother Elisapee, his sisters Rosie and Jessie, and his brother Lazalusie.

Ishulutaq uses a variety of mediums for his carvings including ivory, whalebone, and antler, but prefers working with stone. He has also created many works of graphic art inspired by stories told to him by his grandfather. Some of these drawings have been used by printmakers and weavers in Pangnirtung for their annual collections.

He emphasizes the importance of Inuit stories and cultural values in his work, often depicting the sea goddess Sedna. Ishulutaq is also dedicated to mentoring a younger generation of carvers in Pangnirtung. He is involved in the community outside of his artistic practice through his wilderness survival courses and work with the Pangnirtung Rangers, a local rescue and security team.

Ishulutaq has been exhibited extensively in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Mexico.
